Bookmaking, old school

21Oct

You know when you were in school and you’d watch one of those instructional films on a projector? This is definitely one of those but it’s still fascinating. The process of making a book in the old way (1947), from start to finish, using typesetters and plates — beautiful. And the paper trimming is quite lovely too, how it cuts the book like butter.

Lace me up

14Oct

There’s nothing quite as feminine and lovely as lace. I’m thrilled it’s made quite a comeback for the past few seasons and there’s no signs of it leaving anytime soon.

I bring to you some lacy finds via Etsy!

Sigwalt manual

14Sep

sigwalt manual

A kind individual scanned and posted a link for the original Sigwalt manual on Briarpress the other day. It actually doesn’t have much on how to take care of your Sigwalt — it’s pretty general with lots of type specimens. However, it is pretty cool to finally see an instructional piece for a Sigwalt! Plus, it’s a nice piece for printing in general. I especially love this intro page:

“Start early! Have you ever figured how many millionaires started in life as amateur printers?” Ha, love it. You can download it here.

My Sigwalt has been neglected lately due to a full-time job and a full-time crazy weekend schedule. I haven’t forgotten you though, Sigwalt! I’m itching to get it rolling again…

Found these travel brochures from the 1930′s and it got me dreamin’ for traveling. I would love to get a collection of these to display too.

Vintage finds

29Jul

Over the weekend, I found these fun gems at a flea market in Harpers Ferry, WV:

scottish marmaladeA marmalade pewter container from Scotland.
scottish marmaladeAn old milk bottle from Aristocrat Dairy. Perfect as a vase!

Orlando the Cat

12Jul

Orlando the Cat was an illustrated series from the 1930s thru the early 70s featuring a marmalade cat and his adventures. The illustrated covers are hilarious, creative and just so silly. Something about vintage, illustrated cats makes me laugh…

Treasure trove

22Jun

I recently was given some boxes of old supplies that belonged to a local artist in my hometown. I found about 30 cans of Van Son ink — I’m still checking them through as some are pretty old, but what a collection!

I also found a rogue “P” type

But, best of all, I have to announce that along with these treasures is a “{BABY} sister printer” to my Sigwalt: a Gocco printer!

I’ve never tried Gocco printing before but am really excited to try it out!
