Katty Maurey

26Jan

I love the work of Illustrator, Katty Maurey. And these are her “informal sketches” too from her blog! I love the everyday scenes as well as the bizarre (octopus playing the drums, genius).

It’s inspiring me to start sketching again myself. I always feel guilty when I take the time to draw or paint — I feel like I should be doing something else, that I’m just “playing” (but then I don’t feel that way when I watch TV, ha). But I know I shouldn’t feel guilty — it’s part of my craft that I need to fine tune so it is worth my time. So I’m gonna do it! I think I may actually go out and get some better pens and watercolors this weekend. So I’m doing it!

Deka Animal

06Dec

Keith, the illustrator behind Deka Animal, has beautiful, colorful pieces that I could easily see in our apartment. And for prints around $20 on Etsy, I can see it even more. They’re just so happy and fun, don’t you think? (Plus, don’t you love his photography styling?)

Nikki McClure

26Oct

While in Portland last week, I stumbled upon a great little museum, Museum of Contemporary Craft. If you’re in the area, go visit! Especially because right now there is thee first exhibition of artist, Nikki McClure.

Pacific Northwest artist McClure creates amazing paper cut pieces using just an Xacto knife of scenes based on her everyday life.

We weren’t allowed to take photos of the exhibit unfortunately but I wish I could show you how her pieces were so intricate and had this ‘shadow’ effect when the lights from the museum hit them perfectly.

I just love the perspective she uses and how she takes a simple scene into something else. She also has a few children’s books, notecards and calendars as well which would make perfect gifts.

Food guide

19Aug

Tell it like it is! This book knows how to win my heart. Yes please, I’d like a food guide on the best places to eat in Portland so I can stuff my face. My friend and I are thinking about going to Portland soon so this book may be essential for us. Especially because we are quite experienced in this sort of activity.

Plus the hand-lettering and illustrations don’t hurt either. :)

Sea glass

11Jul

Collections of sea glass, illustrated by Louise van Terheijden from Amsterdam. Her colors and transparency of the watercolors are so ethereal. I just love how it looks ordered, like a collection from a book, but the lines are so organically flowing.

A is for animal

18May

Aren’t these alphabet prints really sweet? This Swedish artist, Malin Svard, has an obsession with animals and illustration. So…I like her! She actually is also a textile designer as well. I think these alphabet prints though would be great for a baby’s room using his/her initials.

Infographics

30Mar

Infographics are so neat. Is that dorky? I’m obviously a visual person so to have information presented in a graphic/visual way is much more effective for my understanding (pushing up glasses). Here are few that caught my eye. A few of these could be great on a wall of your house:

Average animal lifespan (poor fox!).

Easiest way to power a lightbulb

The Beatles throughout the ages (spot Yoko!)

Why you should take care of your teeth (this one is for my sister and cousin…)

The ratio of a perfect pico de gallo ( I may have to debate on the cilantro. Can’t get enough of that stuff).
